As many as 1 in 3 people who go to the Urgent Care Centres at the Royal Blackburn and Burnley General Hospitals don’t need to be there. Insight has shown that although people are aware of the NHS services available they don’t know when to use them. This has caused a big increase in demand for urgent care services in recent years. This demand has caused a strain on our hospital resources and has cost millions of pounds that could have been spent on other vital health services for our patients, their family and friends.
Working in partnership with the hospitals Trust, the two Pennine Lancs CCG’s are helping people get the right treatment at the right place as this does not always have to be provided in a hospital building. Following the engagement with patients and members of the public the new ‘Think’ campaign has been developed. The campaign hopes to educate people to think of the right place to go for the medical treatment or advice when needed.
The campaign is currently being rolled out across Pennine Lancashire through GP practices, engagement sessions, press releases and the radio campaign. Engagement sessions in the local health centres has proved to be positive with many people stating that they have found the information given to be very useful.
