Making small changes this New Year can improve your health and wellbeing

Doctors from NHS Blackburn with Darwen and NHS East Lancashire Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) are encouraging people to think about how they can commit to improving their health this January.

New Year resolutions that support a healthier lifestyle can go a long way to improving your personal health. This could be quitting smoking, reducing your level of alcohol intake, changing your diet, or doing more exercise.

Making these small changes can reduce your risk of major illnesses, such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer.

Dr Phil Huxley, a lead GP within Pennine Lancashire, said: “The health benefits of regular exercise are well documented and it also improves your wellbeing by increasing self-esteem and confidence.

Regular exercise doesn’t have to mean joining a gym, there are plenty of free ways to exercise, such as going for a brisk walk or jog. If you combine regular exercise with a healthy balanced diet you could dramatically improve your health.

Giving up smoking is another resolution you can make to improve your health and there are a range of NHS support services on your doorstep to help you achieve this.”

With Christmas and New Year now behind us you can still join the Alcohol Concern Dry January challenge and stay alcohol free for the rest of the month. Not only will you feel better by ditching the hangover, saving the pennies and reducing the waistline there is an opportunity to support others through being sponsored. We know change doesn’t happen overnight and it can take a while to kick the bad habits. However, if you start to swap healthy habits for unhealthy ones, you will soon start to see the benefits such as more stamina, better sleep and possible weight loss.

Making small changes this New Year will lead to better health and wellbeing in 2018.”
