Why is cancer important in Blackburn with Darwen?

More than one‐quarter of deaths in Blackburn with Darwen are due to cancer, making it the most common cause of death.  The borough has one of the worst incidence and mortality rates for cancer in the country with approximately 600 residents being diagnosed and about 300 dying from it every year.

NHS Blackburn with Darwen Clinical Commissioning Group aims to:

  • reduce premature cancer mortality and improve survival;
  • in particular one year survival;
  • reduce cancer inequalities within our population; and
  • improve patient experience across the cancer pathway
