Doctors from East Lancashire and Blackburn with Darwen are urging people to visit local stop smoking services and join the thousands of people quitting smoking this year for the annual Stoptober campaign.
There is no better or easier time of year to quit smoking than October. Support for those who want to stop smoking is everywhere, and research has found that if you can give up cigarettes for 28 days, you are five times more likely to stop smoking for good.
Ditching your cigarettes can have incredible health benefits. Every year, around 96,000 people in the UK die from diseases caused by smoking. Stopping smoking can have wide ranging benefits, improving your health, and the health of those around you.
Why should you quit smoking?
It’s good for your health. People who stop smoking notice changes like improved taste and smell within days, while important benefits, such as lower risks of heart attack, stroke, lung cancer and improvements in breathing and fertility levels will been seen within the first two years.

Not smoking is also good for those around you. Second-hand smoke causes health risks for people who don’t smoke, which include heart disease, lung cancer, strokes, respiratory infections (such as bronchitis and pneumonia), and a greater risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) in children.
Dr Phil Huxley, Chair at NHS East Lancashire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), said: “Stoptober is a great opportunity for smokers to find lots of support in quitting. Local Stop Smoking Services provide excellent support and advice for anyone wishing to stop smoking, and practice nurses, pharmacists and GPs are always happy to advise on treatment methods you can use to stop smoking for good.”
Dr Chris Clayton, Clinical Chief Officer from NHS Blackburn with Darwen CCG, added: “That’s because around 40% of smokers will die from a condition caused by smoking, and stopping will make a significant difference to the rest of your life, and the life of those around you.”

You can also contact Local Stop Smoking Services for advice and support. These services offer free one-to-one support and stop-smoking medicines, which are available for the cost of a prescription. A recent survey showed that 9 out of 10 smokers who have used these services would recommend them to people wanting to stop smoking for good.
