Feedback from Carers Engagement Event – 23 September 2015

Over 50 people attended a Carers Engagement event at Livesey Children and All Age Centre, Blackburn in September. One of the ideas that was suggested during the event was for ‘Carers Champions’ to be in localities and in GP practices. Better training for clinical staff, including GP’s was also a suggestion put forward to raise awareness and encourage better identification of carers. Delegates included representatives from Blackburn with Darwen Carers Service, Child Action North West, Local Authority, East Lancashire Hospitals Trust, Lancashire Care Foundation Trust, schools as well as adult carers, parent carers and young carers. The event was opened by Executive Member for Children’s Services, Councillor Maureen Bateson who emphasised that carers are everyone’s business. Powerful stories of caring were shared by young carers and adult carers, who reflected on their experiences of caring and the support they have received. A representative from the Carers Trust spoke of the impact of changes in legislation on carers.
The second part of the session saw facilitated group discussions on experiences of services currently and aspirations for future support for carers. Three questions were asked:
• What is your experience of services for carers currently?
• If an integrated service for carers is to be successful, what should it look like?
• How do we make an integrated service where all carers access the support they need?
Attendees fed back that a single, consistent approach for all carers is necessary as well as a clear referral process to access carers’ services.
