Plan ahead and stock up on all essential medicines ahead of the Christmas period

Christmas is one of the busiest times of the year which is why NHS East Lancashire and Blackburn with Darwen Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) are encouraging local residents to plan ahead and stock up on all medicine cabinet essentials well in advance.

During the festive period your first point of call for advice and support should be your local pharmacist. They can give you expert help on everyday illnesses including coughs, colds, aches and pains and they can answer questions about prescribed and over the counter medicines.

People often go to A&E with minor illnesses and injuries when they could be treated more quickly at their local pharmacy or at home.

 Essential medicine must-haves this Christmas:

  • Pain relief: paracetamol, aspirin, ibuprofen
  • Antihistamines: useful for dealing with insect bites and allergies
  • Anti-diarrhoea tablets
  • Indigestion remedies
  • First aid kit: plasters, bandages, thermometer, antiseptic, tweezers, medical tape

Always ensure remedies which are already in your medicines cabinet are still okay to use. If any medicines are past their use-by-date, don’t take them and return them to your local pharmacy for disposal.

Don’t forget to order your repeat prescriptions well in advance to ensure you have all essential medicines to keep you going during the winter months.

Find out the opening times for your GP surgery and remember to collect your prescriptions before the festive period.

Dr Preeti Shukla, GP clinical lead at both CCGs said: “It is important to plan ahead, stock up on your medicine cabinets with plenty of time to spare. By doing this, a lot of people can treat their minor injuries and illnesses at home, avoiding unnecessary trips to the doctor.”

If you need expert advice leading up to Christmas visit your local pharmacy and always remember to order your repeat prescriptions ready in time for the festive period.
