Stoptober is here again, which means local residents are being asked to take up the challenge of giving up smoking for the month of October.
Quitting smoking has a number of benefits on your health. The top five benefits are:

Recent reports of “Popcorn Lung” in the USA linked to people who have been vaping are worrying. Vaping is a relatively new technology and there could well turn out to be long term problems linked to vaping. Vaping is still probably much safer than smoking , so if you don’t feel that working with normal stop smoking treatments are going to fit with your current circumstances, you may still want consider them. Ideally aim to be using the e‑cig for as short a time period as possible and please do not be tempted to have a go at using “DIY” e‑cig liquids, or ones bought from “unofficial” dealers, as this is likely to increase the risks.
Champix is a pill which you can get for free, via stop smoking clinics or your GP. It works really well and most people are able to take it. Please ask about this if you haven’t tried it before.
Nicotine replacement products are also available as an alternative or add-on therapy.
Stopping smoking is hard and like most challenges it can take a couple of goes to get properly stopped, If quitting doesn’t work out for you this time, don’t give up. Celebrate the success you had, even if it was just cutting down. It’s never too late to quit. The services are there for you when you decide it’s time for another go.
The NHS app, ‘Stoptober’ helps you stay on track for the whole 31 days of October by providing daily support and motivation while distracting you when you are craving for a cigarette.
Dr Stuart Berry, a Pendle GP and GP lead for respiratory conditions at East Lancashire Clinical Commissioning Group said:
“Stopping smoking is likely to be the biggest thing that a person can do to improve their health and reduce their chance of more serious health problems. Please make this October your Stoptober — and better still, why not get some of your friends and family involved as well. Celebrate each day that is smoke free.”
“No one is alone in trying to quit smoking – help is out there for everyone. We have clinics around the region that can offer advice on how to quit; tips on how to manage tricky situations and medication that is proven to help reduce the cravings for cigarettes”.
“With the support of your local NHS Stop Smoking Service, smokers are four times more likely to succeed in stopping smoking than if they go ‘cold turkey’”.
