GP home visits are being revolutionised thanks to a Blackburn with Darwen Clinical Commissioning Group scheme using computer tablet technology to provide instant access to and updates of patient records.
The CCG is providing the tablets as a standard resource for GPs in all its 29 practices locally.
“Using a tablet is incomparably better for the GP and patient. GPs can see a patient’s records online when making their diagnosis and can update records while they are with the patient or when they are on the move,” says Chris Clayton, Clinical Chief Officer for Blackburn with Darwen CCG.
Until recently GPs have relied upon a print system which is more difficult to use. They have transcribed their notes when they returned to the surgery after a visit.
The introduction of tablets is highly cost-effective. The application being used for the system has been developed by a long-standing and reputable GP supplier, and the roll out of the tablets is part of a standardised approach being taken by the NHS.
